Gene Description

TERT, telomerase reverse transcriptase, encodes for one of the subunits of telomerase, thereby playing a major role in the maintenance of telomere length via reverse transcriptase activity (PMID: 16756500, PMID: 32242127). TERT amplification and/or overexpression, hypermethylation, and promoter mutations are associated with a variety of tumor types (PMID: 11103775, PMID: 23887589, PMID: 28057768) and result in increased Tert activity to promote tumorigenesis in melanoma (PMID: 32290374), central nervous system cancers (PMID: 32226942), and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (PMID: 31960186).
