Gene Description MUC16, mucin 16, cell surface associated, also known as CA125, is a high molecular weight transmembrane glycoprotein expressed by epithelial cells for protection and lubrication (PMID: 25002120) in the maintenance of mucosa (PMID: 29999426). Overexpression of Muc16 is associated with ovarian, pancreatic, and breast cancers (PMID: 25002120), while fusions have been observed in high-grade serous ovarian cancer (PMID: 31745703) and Muc16 mutations are common in gastric (PMID: 30389134, PMID: 30098163) and endometrial cancers (PMID: 30288353).
